BIOTECH programme - Results of second and third calls
The European Commission, DG XII, has published detailed results of the second call for proposals and preliminary results of the third call for proposals under the specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnologies (BIOTECH). Following the second call, which was launched on 15 September 1995 (OJ No C 240 of 15.9.1995 p. 9), a total of 152 proposals were selected for funding totalling ECU 206.6 million. Of these 152 projects, 65% include at least one partner from the industrial sector. The number of projects selected by call area is as follows: - Area 1: Cell factories: 25 projects; - Area 2: Genome analysis: 6 projects; - Area 3: Plant and animal biotechnology: 26 projects; - Area 4: Cell communication in neurosciences: 24 projects; - Area 5: Immunology, transdisease vaccinology: 14 projects; - Area 6: Structural biology: 22 projects; - Area 7: Pre-normative research, biodiversity and social acceptance: 17 projects; - Area 8: Infrastructures: 8 projects; - Horizontal activities: 10 projects. As regards the third call, launched on 15 June 1996 (OJ No S 114 of 15.6.1996 p. 40), a total of 390 proposals have been registered following the closing date of 18 October 1996. Of particular interest are the numbers of proposals for the two new areas of the programme: structural biology/electronics (26 proposals); and environmental biotechnology (31 proposals). A major rise in applications for demonstration projects was seen in the third call, 37 proposals as opposed to eight in the second call.
