The Committee of the Regions (COR) has published the text of two opinions relating to EU transport policy. These concern the Commission's Common Transport Policy Action Programme 1995-2000, and the Commission's Green Paper on "The Citizen's Network: fulfilling the potential of public passenger transport in Europe". The COR welcomes the Commission's initiatives in this area but calls for greater attention to be given to the specific problems to be found in rural and less populated areas. Among the issues highlighted by COR as being priority areas are: - Putting the citizen at the centre of transport planning; - Making public transport more attractive to the consumer as a means of ensuring a better balance between the car and public transport; - Prioritizing system accessibility, affordability, safety/security, travel convenience and environmental impact; - System integration. The COR stresses the important role of local and regional authorities across Europe in the development and implementation of an effective European transport policy.
