The European Commission is to provide assistance of ECU 2.7 million to support the revitalization of the south-east part of the city of Halle in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The funding comes from the URBAN Community Initiative, part of the Community's Structural Funds. The programme, which will be funded by the local authorities as well as the Community, will bring assistance to an area with around 5,000 residents. The aim is to develop the area into an attractive and job-intensive location for services and handicraft trades. Schemes planned include a youth workshop centre to assist unemployed young people prepare for placements and job-finding, and environmental improvements.
