The European Commission, DG XII, has published a report entitled "European guidelines on quality criteria for diagnostic radiographic images ". The report is based on the work of a group of European radiologists. The Community's work in this area started in 1984, when the Council adopted Directive 84/466/EURATOM on the radiation protection of patients. Following the elaboration of quality criteria in respect of radiological exposure, a series of trials have been carried out across Europe, and discussions and workshops have tested the results. The guidelines contain quality criteria for six conventional examinations: chest; skull; pelvis; lumbar spine; urinary tract; and breast. In addition to the criteria elaborated, the book also contains details of the trials carried out, and outlines a procedure for implementing and auditing the quality criteria.
