The European Commission, DG XIII, has authorized a number of studies on issues relating to "Trusted third parties" (TTP) under the INFOSEC action in the field of security of information systems. The studies will form the basis for actions to be undertaken within the framework of a proposed Council Decision in the field of European Trusted Third Party Services. This Decision would create an appropriate enabling environment for the establishment, by industry and commerce, of a pan-European Trusted Third Party infrastructure to support secure services like Confidentiality and Digital Signature. The studies commissioned, which are expected to be concluded by the end of April 1997, are: - Consolidation of the results of previous TTP work in INFOSEC programmes; - Legal and Regulatory Issues concerning the TTPs and Digital Signatures; - Guidelines for the use of names and keys in a global TTP infrastructure; - Standardization issues for the European Trust Services; - Review and evaluation of biometric techniques.
