CORDIS has launched a new RTD information service on the World Wide Web for the Dutch Presidency of the Council of Ministers of the European Union. The "Dutch Presidency RTD Information Service" has been created to assist in the dissemination of information on developments in EU research activities from 1 January to 30 June 1997. The Dutch Presidency Web service follows the success of the Irish Presidency RTD Information Service, which was established for Ireland's EU Presidency. The service will provide regularly updated information on the full range of areas covered by the Research Council. It also provides information on research and related developments in the Netherlands during the course of the Presidency. During the Dutch term of office, a number of important topics will be discussed in the Research Council. In particular, the formal proposal for the Fifth RTD Framework Programme will be the focus of RTD activities during 1997. Other areas for discussion will include the implementation of the Innovation Action Plan, the first major evaluation of the Fourth Framework Programme, and international cooperation in research and development. One of the Presidency's overall priorities is the preparation for enlargement of the EU to the Central and Eastern European countries. In the research field, the Dutch Presidency intends to invite the Research Ministers of these countries to part of the Council meeting, in order to promote their involvement in the Framework Programmes. The Dutch Presidency RTD Information Service will cover developments in all of these areas. Regular updates will highlight the activities of the Research Working Group, which prepares the work of the Research Council. In addition, the service will also spotlight the activities of Dutch research institutions and RTD-related activities in The Netherlands during the Presidency. Other useful information available on the service includes a calendar of events scheduled to take place during the Presidency and a list of Dutch RTD-related contacts and Web addresses. The World Wide Web service, which is in both English and Dutch, aims to contribute to increased transparency and greater understanding of EU support for research and technological development and innovation.
