The European Commission has published the 1997 Work Programme of the Community action programme on health promotion, information, education and training. The action programme aims to promote healthy lifestyles, and the creation of supporting environments. It embraces public health, prevention, and promotion of health. The programme will promote the devising and assessment of health promotion strategies and dissemination of good practice. Emphasis is also placed on methods of delivering health information and education. The budget for the 1997 programme will be ECU 7 million. Projects will be sought through calls published in the Official Journal of the European Communities, planned for 15 March and 15 September 1997. Projects must be coordinated at European level to receive support. A number of priorities have been identified for support under the programme in 1997. These may address specific health issues, particular population groups, or people in defined settings (such as the work place). Other priority areas include training, quality improvement, and the use of technological developments.
