The European Commission has awarded a grant of ECU 98.9 million from the Community's Structural Funds to support industrial restructuration in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon in France. The support programme approved by the Commission aims primarily at tackling the problem of unemployment in the region and should create approximately 5,200 new jobs. The three main objectives of the Languedoc-Roussillon programme are to: - Promote the development of SMEs and micro enterprises by supporting their investment efforts, in particular with regard to new technology; - Reinforce the economic attractiveness of the region and the quality of the business environment; - Facilitate the adaptation of human resources through targeted training actions. The European funding, of which ECU 85.09 million will come from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and ECU 13.78 million from the European Social Fund (ESF), represents a little under 30% of the total cost of the programme which amounts to ECU 342 million. The remainder of the funding will come from national and private funding sources.
