Commission awards ECU 27.5 million to Rhineland-Palatinate
The Commission has awarded assistance of ECU 27.5 million to the German Land of Rhineland-Palatinate, under the Community's Structural Funds. This award is the final award of Structural Fund assistance to German Objective 2 regions (for the economic conversion of industrial areas lagging behind) in the period 1994-1999. This brings the total EU funding for these areas in Germany to ECU 861 million up to 1999. In Rhineland-Palatinate, money will go to the areas of Pirmasens/Zweibrücken and Kaiserslautern, which both have very high rates of unemployment. The funding, which will be complemented by German public finance, will help to create around 4,200 jobs, as well as improve the skills of around 3,000 other people. Examples of projects to be supported are the creation of an innovation and incubator centre, and a microtechnology centre. In addition, support will also be given to the European Business and Innovation Centre in Kaiserslautern.
