The EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, set up in 1987, provides a range of training programmes and information actions aimed at promoting a better understanding of advanced management practices in Japan and at increasing industrial exchanges between the two regions. The "HRTP-Japan Industry Insight" programme, run by the Centre, offers an eleven-week training course aimed at providing EU business men and women with a wide-ranging and detailed understanding of Japanese businesses and industry. The course includes: language tuition; lectures on Japanese society, history, politics, economy and business management; study trips and seminars; training courses in intercultural management; and individual visits to Japanese and European companies depending on the specific interests of the participant. Courses presently scheduled are: HRTP-JII 21: May-July 1997; HRTP-JII 22: January-March 1998; HRTP-JII 23: May-July 1998. The Centre covers all costs directly linked to the programme itself. The European company is expected to cover the costs of travel to and from Japan, accomodation costs in Tokyo (approximately ECU 4,000 per month) and travel and accomodation costs during the two weeks spent in individual businesses. The EU offers grants to SMEs (independent) of less than 250 employees. Requests for EU grants must be made at the time of application.
