The European Commission, DG XII, has published a report, entitled "European stratospheric ozone research 1996-1997", which provides an overview of current stratospheric ozone research supported by the European Commission within the first phase of the Community's Environment and Climate research programme. The report describes 34 research projects which are being supported during 1996-1997 in the area of "stratospheric chemistry and depletion of the ozone layer". These projects address specific aspects of the stratospheric ozone issues, including: - The scientific processes responsible for the ozone depletion in the polar and mid-latitude regions; - The quantification of the natural variability of the stratosphere; - The impact of aircraft emissions; - The evaluation of potential effects of ozone depletion (UV radiation fluxes); - The development of instrumentation for both stratospheric ozone and UV radiation measurements. In addition, two further projects supported under other areas of the Environment and Climate programme ("UV effects" and "space techniques"), and one project supported by the BRITE-EURAM programme (in the aeronautics area), and strongly linked with stratospheric ozone research, are also included.
