The European Commission has provisionally approved funding of ECU 13.8 million from the European Union's (EU) Structural Funds to support industrial reconstruction in the region of Lolland (Denmark). The EU funding will be complemented by ECU 12.9 million in national funding and ECU 20.5 million from private investment sources. The overall objectives of the programme are to foster the region's development potential, to widen the base for business development, to maintain and increase the number of jobs in the short and long term, and to increase the overall income of the region. The programme is expected to create and/or maintain approximately 230 jobs in the short term and 600 in the longer term. The strategy for reaching this objective is to develop and utilise the region's own potential, and to link its activities with the national and international economy. The focus will be on the productive and service sectors, and especially on tourism. In particular, there will be investment incentives for companies, the enhancement of research and development, consulting and feasibility studies as well as vocational training measures. The programme will be completed by technical assistance provisions. The programme should receive final approval in March or April 1997.
