The European Commission, DG XII, has awarded 30 training grants under the specific RTD programme in the field of Biotechnology (BIOTECH) following the November 1996 evaluation. The call for proposals for BIOTECH training grants was initially launched in March 1995, and proposals are evaluated in batches at four-monthly intervals. A total of 61 applications were received between July and November 1996, from which 30 were selected to receive grants. This latest set of awards brings the total number of BIOTECH training grants, since March 1995, to almost 200, worth a total of ECU 15 million. The next batch of evaluations will be carried out on proposals received by 1 March 1997, with further evaluations after 1 July and 1 November 1997. Information on the 210 RTD projects funded by the BIOTECH programme following the first two calls for proposals may be found on the BIOTECH homepage on DG XII's Web service on the EUROPA homepage. This includes details of the increasing levels of industrial participation in the calls. In the first and second calls, over 50% of projects proposals had industrial partners. In the third call, launched in June 1996, this increased to 65.2% of project proposals.
