The European Commission has announced the award of ECU 79.43 million from the Structural Funds to support industrial restructuring in the Twente region of The Netherlands. This aid comes in addition to aid for other Dutch industrial regions, recently announced by the Commission. The funding falls under Objective 2 of the Structural Funds', which supports the regeneration of declining industrial regions. The programme established for the Twente region should create some 2,600 new jobs, as well as supporting training for a further 14,000 people. The total investment in the programme will be around ECU 244 million, with contributions from the Dutch authorities and the private sector. The main aim of the programme is to assist diversification in the region, where the textile industry has traditionally been dominant. The programme will concentrate on the development and upgrading of industrial sites and technological development and technology transfer for SMEs.
