Telematics Applications for Research - New standardization support service
A new "Standardization Area" has been created on the SCIMITAR WWW server. This new area explains the standardization support mechanism for "Telematics for Research" projects (a sector within the Telematics Applications programme) and provides meeting reports and information on the work of various standardization bodies. The SCIMITAR (Support and Coordination for Integrated Multimedia Telematics Applications for Researchers) project ensures the overall coherence of projects in the "Telematics for Research" sector by encouraging exchanges of experience and expertise and acting as an observatory for the sector. Among the various support services offered by SCIMITAR is the standardization support service. To facilitate the introduction of new standards into the relevant bodies, the SCIMITAR project provides partial funding of travel expenses to international standardization meetings. The document "Procedures for the Financing of the Contributors to the Standards Process", now available on the SCIMITAR server, explains how this works. The new SCIMITAR information service on the Web also provides reports of standardization meetings relevant to "Telematics for Research" projects, and information on the standards bodies for which SCIMITAR supports the attendance of meetings. These include: the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF); the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C); the European Workshop for Open Systems (EWOS); and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
