Council Decision on radionavigation systems for Europe
A Council Decision on radionavigation systems for Europe (92/143/EEC of 25.2.1992) establishes a framework for the establishment of regional LORAN-C radionavigation systems with the aim of ensuring coherent and complete coverage of the European maritime area, avoiding as much as possible the imposition of additional costs upon the users of existing terrestrial systems. Without prejudice to such existing systems, Member States which participate in or join regional agreements on LORAN-C shall do so in a way which fulfils international objectives. The Commission shall ensure coordination between participating Member States with a view to ensuring compatibility, and shall encourage the development of receivers which take account of the ongoing development of satellite systems and the enhancement of the present LORAN-C system. The Commission shall also work with a view to setting up a radionavigation plan taking into account satellite navigation systems, existing terrestrial systems and the plans of the Member States. Member States and the Commission (as members or observers within the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities) shall support efforts to set up a worldwide radionavigation system including European regional LORAN-C chains with the purpose of enlarging worldwide LORAN-C coverage to improve the safety of navigation and protection of the marine environment.
