New data on stratospheric chemistry

The seasonal cycles of odd nitrogen and halogen within the stratosphere have been recorded and modelled by researchers in Germany.

Nine balloon soundings were carried out, using three different spectroscopic methods. The remote sensing was conducted at varying latitudes, and during different seasons, and measurements were compared with predicted values. This method has enabled the stratospheric chemistry of odd nitrogen to be measured more accurately, and may also be relevant to research into the role of iodine-bearing source gases on the earth's atmosphere. The combination of a number of spectroscopic methods allows for greater accuracy in modelling seasonal cycles of gases, and will lead to improved understanding of the effects of inorganic ozone loss promoting gases.
