The European Commission, DG XII, has published a booklet entitled "Design studies for 100 T magnets", which outlines the work of the European research network in the field, supported by the Community's Human Capital and Mobility (HCM) programme. The booklet is the seventh in a series describing the work of HCM networks. Magnetic fields, such as the earth's magnetic field, influence life greatly without directly interacting with human bodies. The network dealt with much stronger magnetic fields, such as the ones used in medicine (NMR imaging) and superconductors. The booklet describes the research carried out with the aim of discovering if, and how, very strong pulsed magnetic fields can be created and used. High magnetic fields of this type are difficult to obtain because of the heat and high pressures involved. So far, only 40 to 60 Tesla have been reached. Therefore, a 100 T pulsed field magnet would mean major progress for international science, and the booklet outlines the networks progress towards reaching that goal. The most interesting application would be in the manufacturing of semiconductors.
