Development of a standard method (protocol) for the measurement of organic contaminants "tars" in biomass producer gases

New standard promotes biomass gasification technology

The large variety and non-uniformity of organic contaminants found in biomass gasification systems makes their systematic measurement a difficult task and is damaging for the systems.

Addressing this issue, an EC funded project focuses on the development of a standard method (protocol) for the measurement of organic contaminants "tars" in biomass producer gases. This is a major problem found not only on a European-wide scale, but also worldwide and for this reason the consortium includes 17 partners including North American suppliers and institutes. One of the key project results is a guideline for the sampling and analysis of tar and particles in biomass gasification producer gases. The guideline may be applied for specifying concentration ranges of organic contaminants in gases of all common types of biomass gasifier technology. Such technology includes updraft, downdraft fixed bed, atmospheric and pressurised fluidised bed gasifiers. This guideline involves descriptions of required equipment and procedures for sampling-, post-sampling and analysis. Measurement of organic contaminants from biomass gasifiers is feasible in all relevant conditions of temperature and pressure in both raw and cleaned fuel gases. Moreover, particles can also be measured, as their interaction with organic contaminants ("tars") is critical for all followed procedures of the guideline. Most of the widely accepted companies, institutes and universities engaged in development or commercialisation of biomass gasification technology have already accepted this guideline. Within the next years it is expected that it will become an industrial standard and the necessary steps have already been taken for further approval by the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN).
