The European Commission, DG XII, has published a study on genetic fingerprints, as part of a series on the socio-economic effects of biotechnology, conducted under the Biotechnology specific RTD programme. The study brings together a number of legal experts to analyse and discuss the impact of modern biotechnology on different legal systems and traditions on family law. The work also tries to complement the legal expertise with a sound basis of scientific facts, giving the legal experts a series of detailed presentations from practitioners in the field of medicine and biotechnology. Legal experts from countries within and outside the European Union present, from a personal viewpoint, the situation and experience within their country. The report of each expert is intended as a contribution to the debate on biotechnology and should not be regarded as the position of the Commission on the subject.
