Coping with Internet traffic: novel terabit routers
The EU's ATRIUM project set out to test and validate the newly developed advanced terabit router (ATR) both as a core and as a border router. Project researchers tested the ATR's interoperability within a variety of network settings and gained important insight into the integration of such hardware in IP networks. A network management tool was created to test ATR's performance within the networks. The tool was termed AtriOSS (Atri-Operational Support Systems) and was constructed in a manner as to precisely identify quality problems within the network and their impact on carried traffic. Furthermore, AtriOSS can quantify the quality of service delivered to customers and the occurrence of faults within the network as well as provide a list of physical and logical network entities. The development of the ATR in combination with AtriOSS signifies an important landmark for the European telecommunications industry and underlines the EU's commitment. Prototypes are available for testing by potential partners keen to expand their network capabilities and the management mechanisms used for their support. Such partners could include academic institutions and satellite communication providers among others.
