The European Commission has published a manual of codes of practice for waste management on islands. The codes were developed by a group of consultants from different Member States working on behalf of the Commission. The manual has been published to provide decision-makers at local and regional level with a practical tool to help in the effective management of municipal and other types of waste, in accordance with the Community strategy for waste management and the Fifth Environmental Action Programme. It will also provide a better basis for understanding the essence of waste management problems on islands and archipelagos. The codes introduce good practices for developing waste management systems, covering the identification of problems, choice of strategy, organization, economy, collection and transportation, treatment, environmental impact assessments, choosing alternatives, and implementation of the strategy.
