Regulating prepreg manufacturing online

A new manufacturing system containing a near-infrared spectrometer with adapted wavelength range has been designed. The result is a more homogeneous resin-based product and a reduction in wastes.

Software was developed for measurement control and for sample evaluation. As a result, three programs were created. One program is for calibrating various fabrics; the second is for validating the system, and the third is for continuously measuring volatile content online. For the calibration of the on-line system, eleven calibrations were designed for yellow and black fabrics. The calibrations were then examined on the prepreg production line during which the on-line system continuously shows the resin and volatile content via a monitor. Further development included the selection of an application model as well as automatic computer programmes for the determination of feature parameters of the prepreg. A data acquisition system was also designed and manufactured, as was a control system. Although more development is still necessary to ensure enhanced sensitivity, the new system can still ensure steady quality in the end product. What this means is an increase in company competitiveness and a decrease of waste and scrap. This in turn lessens the load on landfills and results in using raw materials more wisely. The system is being adjusted for industrial applications.
