Design and assessment of dynamic questionnaires

The Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) engine offers support for presentation and evaluation of structured and dynamic questionnaires, including adaptive ones.

Aided by the QTI engine questionnaires defined under the international standard IMS (Instructional Management Systems) - QTI can be easily interpreted and presented to the final user. On the basis of defined attributes, the engine provides dynamic generation and evaluation of questionnaires. Moreover, the presentation functionality allows the user to receive feedback from the evaluation. The tool has been implemented in JAVA and Flash. The QTI engine was developed within the context of the ALFANET project. This IST funded project focused on the construction and evaluation of a Learning Management System (LMS) for addressing the issue of adaptive learning. The QTI engine can be effectively integrated with the ALFANET e-learning platform, but it can also easily be exploited by other e-learning platforms. It is particularly suited for platforms that do not provide facilities for structured and dynamic questionnaires. The QTI engine provides a variety of presentation options including items (questions) of very different types. It displays increased capabilities for incorporating items from various object banks and it may be employed under different conditions. The assessment of questionnaires is performed very consistently. Due to its compliance to the IMS-QTI standard, this module is very flexible to integrate with other standards such as the IMS-LD (Learning Design) and IMS-LIP (Learner Information Packaging). Collaborations are sought with educational institutions and non-educational organisations, such as publishing companies conducting surveys, who are interested in integrating adaptive assessments in their systems. The QTI engine is offered under GNU General Public License (GPL) and can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/projects/alfaqtiautor/(opens in new window) and accessed from http://rtd.softwareag.es/alfanetqtitools/(opens in new window)
