Virtual training for brownfield regeneration
There is a large amount of unused land in the EU constituting an under exploited natural resource. Given that natural resources are limited, the future of sustainable urban development in industrial areas will need to take place on brownfield sites. In light of this, the RESCUE project has examined the best practice approaches for brownfield regeneration at reduced costs and has integrated its results into a holistic system approach. One of the outcomes of their efforts is the Virtual Training Centre (VTC). It serves as a long-term electronic resource, offering web based training for self-teaching as well as the option for use in face-to-face training. The learning outcomes for VTC users are many. They will understand the meaning of brownfield regeneration and appreciate its environmental, social and economic objectives. Furthermore, users will realise the nature of indicators to track progress as well as the particular indicators RESCUE has identified. Finally, they will appreciate the need to compromise between individual indicators and objectives for obtaining the utmost total sustainability level for a site. The VTC will contribute carrying out European and regional policy and programmes and will provide criteria for the support of future funding decisions.
