Cohesion Fund - initial assessment for 1996
The European Commission, DG XVI, has published an initial assessment of the Cohesion Fund during 1996. In total, ECU 2.44 billion, the full allocation of resources for the year were committed by the Commission during 1996. These funds went to the four least prosperous Member States. Proportionately, the division between these was as follows: - Spain - 55%; - Greece - 18%; - Portugal - 18%; - Ireland - 9%. The funding was split almost equally between transport infrastructure and environmental projects. In the environmental sector the majority of projects supported concerned the treatment of waste water and the improvement of drinking water supplies. Transport projects supported included major motorway and rail links, designed to integrate these countries into the trans-European transport networks.
