The European Commission has selected 128 projects for support in 1997 under the KALEIDOSCOPE programme for European cultural cooperation. The projects were selected from 914 submitted in response to a call for proposals launched in October 1996 (OJ No S 196 of 9.10.1996 p. 28). The projects selected will benefit from total Community funding of ECU 6.8 million. Under Action 1, 118 events and cultural projects, to be carried out in partnership or through networks involving partners from at least three Member States, will be funded. These projects aim to promote the knowledge and transmission of culture and of European cultural experiences, as well as improving the skills of artists and others involved in the sector, and improving access to culture for all citizens. Action 2 supports large-scale European cooperation projects, which are wide-ranging, high quality and which will have a high level of socio-economic impact. Ten projects will be supported under this Action. Support under Action 2 includes funding for the European Union Youth Orchestra and European Union Baroque Orchestra. This support gives young European musicians the chance to improve their skills through membership of a European orchestra. In addition, also under Action 2, support for the European City of Culture 1997 (Thessalonika) and for the European Cultural Month (Ljubljana) will also come from the KALEIDOSCOPE programme, as in previous years.
