The Environment Institute of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre has published a report on "Standards and strategies in the EU to control trihalomethanes (THMs) in drinking water". The report responds to the problems raised by disinfectant by-products in treated drinking water. In particular, it is necessary to identify changes in treatment methods which will ensure minimum by-products in drinking water without losing efficiency in disinfectant treatment. The report represents the first attempt to gather information on all Member States' policies regarding disinfection of water supplies, and on the levels of THMs in drinking water. It will therefore be a valuable tool for decision-makers, authorities and others involved in water supply and treatment.
