Biochemical engineering science under the fourth Framework programme
A strategic case for research in biochemical engineering science has been submitted to the Commission for consideration under the fourth Framework programme for research and technological development. The document results from discussions between government officials, academics and industrialists in Germany, France, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Denmark. It argues that a strongly focussed programme of biochemical engineering science is essential to facilitate the timely commercialization of biotechnology products in Europe, and concludes that Europe has the opportunity and the skills to be at the forefront in the commercialization of opportunities presented by modern biology, via a programme which underpins industrial needs.
