An International Scientific Conference on the Use of Meat and Bone Meal is being organized at the joint initiative of the European Commission and the European Parliament. The objective of the conference is to evaluate the use of meat and bone meal in light of the BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy or "Mad Cow" disease) crisis. The conference, which will take place in Brussels, Belgium, on 1-2 July 1997, will address the scientific, regulatory, ecological and economic aspects of the issue. The consumers' perspective will be presented by consumer associations. The aim of the conference is to examine health and safety implications of the use of meat and bone meal in the European Union, within the context of a wide-ranging debate with all sectors involved, so as to enable the Commission and the Parliament to identify future policy options and the measures which still need to be taken in this area. Conclusions of the conference will be presented by the Commission and the Parliament at the closing session.
