The European Community's LIFE financial instrument for the environment funds projects in three main sectors; LIFE Environment; LIFE Nature; and LIFE Third Countries. Over 500 projects have been funded under the LIFE Environment sector since 1992. A list of 15 projects, one for each Member State, has been selected and is available on the LIFE Environment Home Page. The LIFE Environment list of "success stories" reflects the wide range of initiative receiving support. The projects presented include: - Austria: Cold degermination of beer; - Belgium: Environmental friendly cleaning of integrated circuits; - Denmark: Elimination of toxic substances when cleaning underwater surfaces; - Finland: Recovery and recycling of medical glass waste; - France: Landscape protection and tourism development in the Loire River Valley; - Germany: Bio-monitoring of the River Ruhr; - Greece: Actions for the protection and development of the Zagori area; - Ireland: An emission-free process for crystal manufacture; - Italy: Paper made by carbon dioxide and orange peels; - Luxembourg: New means to supervise and control the environment in Luxembourg; - The Netherlands: Recycling of toner cartridges; - Portugal: Macrophyte beds in the treatment of polluted industrial effluents; - Spain: 100% recovery and recycling of packages; - Sweden: A new approach to combat macro-algae blooms; - United Kingdom: Restoration of the Norfolk Broads. This list will be complemented, in autumn 1997, with a more comprehensive printed document including approximately 20% of all LIFE projects.
