Radar for cars
The Radar-net project comprised academic establishments and radar, semi-conductor and automobile manufacturers from five EU Member States. The consortium developed a low-cost radar network for cars that could be applied to a number of areas including collision warning and avoidance, and as a parking aid. Project aims included the development of a multifunctional radar network employing synchronised wide beam near-distance and far-distance sensors based on a new 77\;GHz chipset. Prototypes of the radar networks were installed in a number of experimental cars and validated under real traffic conditions. Lower production costs, faster development of new systems and a reduced time to market are among the project's benefits. The new multifunctional radar network can help improve vehicle safety in the future and benefit drivers, passengers and other road users. Research conducted by the Radar-net project will enable the European automotive industry to produce cheaper but safer cars enabling it to compete more effectively in the global market.
