1996 Cohesion Fund Annual Report
The European Commission has adopted the 1996 Cohesion Fund Annual Report, which gives details of the projects supported by the Fund during the year. The Cohesion Fund was established by the Treaty of Maastricht to support transport and environmental infrastructure projects in the four least developed Member States: Spain, Portugal, Greece and Ireland. For the period 1993 to 1999, a total of ECU 15,500 billion is available for allocation under the Cohesion Fund. In 1996, for the fourth consecutive year, the whole allocation of funding was committed. A total of ECU 2,443 billion was committed, broken down almost evenly between environment and transport projects. By country, the breakdown, with percentage of the total, was as follows: - Spain: ECU 1,341 billion (54.91%); - Greece: ECU 438 billion (17.94%); - Ireland: ECU 221 billion (9.07%); - Portugal: ECU 439 billion (17.99%).
