Luxembourg Presidency - Research priorities
The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council has published a programme outlining its priorities in all areas of EU policies during its six months Presidency (July 1997 to December 1997). In the research field, the Presidency's priorities will be as follows: "Given the wide recognition that research and development is a crucial factor in improving the Community's economic competitiveness, and consequently in creating employment, the Presidency's major efforts will focus on implementing a work programme centred on the content and implementation of the Fifth Framework Programme, the adoption of which will be the cornerstone of the Community's research efforts in the next few years. The Presidency will guide discussions towards consolidating political convergence along the various lines set out in the Commission's proposal. In addition, international cooperation in science and technology will stay high on the Research Council's agenda, particularly in respect of concluding Cooperation Agreements with various third countries." During the Luxembourg Presidency, one Research Council meeting is planned, on 10 November 1997. This will be chaired by Mrs. Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, Luxembourg's Minister for National Education and Vocational Training.
