Science on the radio

Science plays a vital role in modern life, but the subject often fails to capture the imagination of the general public. An EU-funded project developed a series of radio broadcasts to inspire youngsters to take a greater interest in science and consider it as a possible career path.

The 'Let's talk about science' (LETS!) project created 11 short science-based radio plays for children. The plays were based on the children’s books of Dr Gottfried Tichy, a Professor of Geography and Geology from the University of Salzburg. Each performance was followed by a studio discussion during which youngsters were able to question scientists about issues raised in the play and relate the new information to their daily lives. In addition, 11 radio shows of 30 minutes each involving science and society were targeted at teenagers. The aim was to explain the role of science in addressing major global issues such as climate change, gene technology, nutrition and poverty. Evaluation of the project showed that the programmes could be understood by the target group and had the capacity to engage their interest, curiosity and enthusiasm for science. The LETS! initiative was therefore successful in encouraging an active exchange between the scientific community and young people.
