The 'Welcome to observations, news and demonstrations of European research and science' (Wonders) project promoted the European Science Festival 2006 through the capacities of major European groups active in the field of science communication. This included showcasing science weeks, science festivals, science days, science centres and museums, and European science journalists to stimulate a greater awareness of science, technology and the humanities and science in society. Wonders was Europe's first science festival boasting the 'carousel of science'. This was an inter-European exchange of the best science communication activities of science festivals, science cafes and Internet pledges. The best science communication events were presented at a final event at the end of the project. The total of all exchanges, from one science event to another, covered 31 860 km across Europe and included topics on crime-solving techniques, biological mechanisms, health issues, robotics and the future of transport. The mass participatory character of the 'carousel of science' helped make the goals and successes of the Wonders project more visible to the public, and in turn highlighted innovative activities taking place throughout Europe.
