The European Commission has approved aid of some ECU 273.4 million for economic reconversion and industrial restructuring in the regions of Haute-Normandie, Franche-Comté and Midi Pyrénées in France. The programmes approved by the Commission, which will run from 1997 to 1999, are aimed primarily at addressing the employment situation in areas of industrial decline where unemployment is particularly high. In total some several thousand jobs should be created or saved thanks to a series of measures aimed at supporting business, improving training, reinforcing technological innovation, protecting the environment and diversifying activities. The total cost of the programmes, including national and private contributions, will be approximately ECU 800 million.
