Refining the transfer of knowledge
Knowledge transfer among nations and different parts of Europe has the potential to strengthen research and development (R&D), reaping positive rewards for the economy. The EU-funded project 'Regions for research' (R4R) took steps to upgrade existing knowledge transfer systems. It improved the design, implementation and monitoring of the various systems by strengthening relevant public administration. To achieve its aims, the project compared existing knowledge transfer mechanisms with the real needs of stakeholders on local and international levels. It established an analysis toolkit to collect data and assess current knowledge transfer systems. The project team also identified best practices in transferring knowledge related to R&D, offering key insight, facts, figures and mechanisms in the field. In addition, R4R also outlined success factors and transferability criteria that help create a system to promote links among nations and regions. The project results have been disseminated through a conference in Brussels which brought together EU officials, regional policymakers, research experts and other stakeholders. Lastly, best practices in the field were outlined in a publication that was distributed to stakeholders as well. These actions will help encourage stronger regional collaboration in research and assist in creating regions or research clusters that will most certainly benefit the European economy.
