The specific research and technological development programme in the field of biotechnology (1990-1994) was adopted by Council Decision 92/218/EEC of 26 March 1992. An Annex to the Decision sets out the scientific and technical objectives and content of the programme, comprising three areas: - Molecular approaches: Protein structure and function; structure of genes; expression of genes. - Cellular and organism approaches: Cellular regeneration, reproduction and development of living organisms; metabolism of animals, plants and microbes; essential physiological tracts; communication systems within living matter. - Ecology and population biology: Ecological implications of biotechnology; conservation of genetic resources. The programme is adopted for the period 26 March 1992 to 31 December 1994. Funds estimated as necessary for its execution amount to ECU 162.36 million (of which at least 10% will be allocated to basic research), plus ECU 1.64 million earmarked as the programme's contribution to the centralized scheme for dissemination and exploitation of results.
