The Ninth EU Contest for Young Scientists will take place in Milan, Italy, from 9 to 14 September. The annual contest is organized by the European Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, and brings together the winners of national competitions in the EU Member States as well as a number of other countries. A total of 30,000 young scientists, aged between 15 and 20, participated in the national contests. Of these almost 100 have been selected to participate in the final. In addition, 50 high quality projects will be on display in a public Science Fair during the Contest. Up to 12 prizes will be awarded by an international jury of eminent scientists - three first prizes of ECU 5,000, three second prizes of ECU 3,000, and six third prizes of ECU 1,500. For the first time, two contestants from the Eighth Contest held last year will award an Alumni Prize to one project. Commissioner Edith Cresson, responsible for science, research and development, will attend the award ceremony, to be held in Milan Town Hall on 13 September. She said that, "The Contest and its high profile stage will provide these young scientists with a unique opportunity to interact at an early age with the best of their contemporaries from across Europe. This early immersion and integration in the European and international scientific community will no doubt yield remarkable results on tomorrow's market." Several projects from previous years have produced patents and innovative scientific and commercial applications. Although it was established to find young talents and encourage contacts between science students, the EU Contest has also proved to be a springboard to a successful scientific career.
