Earth Observation tools for the Balkans

Until now, Balkan countries did not yet have an integrated approach to the implementation of Earth Observation (EO) applications for environmental monitoring and management. This has meant limited synergy between national and regional institutions, as well as a lack of effective infrastructure and technologies.

The aim of the EU-funded 'Strengthening and development of Earth observation activities for the environment in the Balkan area' (OBSERVE) project was to compile the information needed for an integrated analysis on the current status of EO activities and networks in the Balkans. OBSERVE also aimed to raise awareness and establish firm links with regional decision-making bodies. Project activities stimulated new research ideas and the adoption of research methodologies. There was also a particular focus on developing and fostering an environment in which the use of EO would enhance decision making. OBSERVE managed to bring together research communities and stakeholders from different origins as well. This served to boost competiveness and the effective use of resources within the EO industry. In addition, the adoption of best practices and standards will have an extensive economic impact on the Balkans. The experience gained from this project will thus simplify future cooperative activities between Balkan partners.
