Development of PCM-based innovative insulating solutions for the Light-weight building sector

New super insulator for energy-efficient buildings

Modern building practices put an emphasis on lightweight and modular materials, but these have an increased cooling and heating cost. Combined with laws and policies mandating increased energy efficiency in all buildings, this has created a need for materials with improved insulating properties.

The EU-funded 'Development of PCM-based innovative insulating solutions for the light-weight building sector' (STOREPET) project is developing such a material. The project is working in partnership with major construction associations to rapidly bring this innovative product to market. In particular, researchers have set out to incorporate phase change materials (PCMs) into a non-woven fibre material that offers heating, cooling and sound insulation, all in one lightweight product. Research into and modelling of various materials will be developed and tested in the laboratory to provide potential products. A full evaluation of the current needs, regulations and available materials within the building industry has provided a starting point for the study. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic was selected as the polymer fibre, while several paraffin-based PCMs were selected for their thermal properties. Several production technologies were also designed and tested using these products. Ultimately, STOREPET will create a production process for a widely useful insulation product that can be tailored to different uses. This will have a significant impact on building practices in Europe and, in fact, the research results are already being put into practice in the industry.
