Oryzon Genomics and eBiointel develop a new concept of bioinformatics platform for the processing of data on functional genomics

The functional genomics firm Oryzon Genomics (http://www.oryzon.com) in the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (PCB)(Barcelona Science Park) and eBiointel (http://www.ebiointel.com) have signed a strategic collaboration agreement to develop a new bioinformatics platform, called ORYMOLD, which will allow the storage and analysis of data related to genome research.

Driven by Oryzon Genomics, the project contemplates the creation of new modules of bioinformatics applications that will be developed by eBiointel and will allow the processing of a wide range of data obtained from genome studies. It also includes a potent biological interface where scientists can submit their own data, and architectural elements that lend versatility and flexibility to the system. These structures will be managed by the Scientific and Technical Service at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) (University of Barcelona) and ex-members of the firm iSOCO-Lab respectively. The first phase of the project will cost 150,000 , which will be partially financed by the Centre dInnovació i Desenvolupament Empresarial (CIDEM) (Centre for Innovation and Business Development)of the Catalan Government through the Program of Consortium Projects. According to the director general of Oryzon Genomics, Carlos Buesa, The new platform is a key element in the development of our program of gene discovery in cereals, but it will also allow us to develop a new concept of bioinformatics platform, which may be of great interest for the study of other living organisms and for application in other industrial areas. We have managed to join together a team of high-level experts, which shows that marriage between the public and private technology sectors in Catalonia in the past two years is beginning to bear fruit of high added value. The director of eBiointel Antoni Barbadilla adds that ORYMOLD is the first product of this type in our country, the fruit of cooperation between functional genomics and bioinformatics firms. These two areas are destined to have a primordial economic role in the biomedicine of this new century. The characteristics of ORYMOLD position it as a unique product in the biotechnology market. Oryzon Genomics, a spin-off of the UB and Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) (Higher Scientific Research Council), specializing in the discovery and analysis of genes, forms part of the Bioincubator CIDEM-PCB in the PCB. The firm counts on the most advanced equipment in the field of genomics and molecular biology to carry out made-to-measure technological development for the agro-alimentary and pharmaceutical industries. Oryzon, with an international team of 20 scientific experts, is now working on an ambitious internal R&D program in cereals: the program ORYGENE, which has received financial backing from CIDEM, from PROFIT and from CDTI-NEOTEC. eBiotel is a bioinformatics firm connected with the Biocampus at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Autonomous University of Barcelona ), which is dedicated to the construction of bioinformatics platforms while at the same time implementing the most advanced computer technology techniques for storage and access of biomedical data by bioinformatics applications of analysis. The company also offers a service of analysis and interpretation of genome information and training in bioinformatics.,
