ICOB' 03 - Workshop on Immersive Communication and Broadcast Systems

29. -30. January 2003,Fraunhofer Institut fur Nachrichtentechnik, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut ,Jointly organised by IST projects VIRTUE, ATTEST, Eye-2-Eye and ITG FG 3.1.2

The mission in immersive media is to design novel communication systems offering sensations similar to those experienced in real life. Such systems would re-create the perception of natural conditions, spaces and sensory stimuli to provide convincing impressions of social and physical presence. The wide field of applications reaches from the daily business - where immersive 3D videoconferencing may introduce a new era of tele-collaboration - to professional entertainment. New broadcast services like immersive 3D television will provide a state of presence which is the domain of the theme park, cinema or IMAX theatre today. The development of immersive systems requires inter-disciplinary expertise from many research areas including presence engineering, human factors, computer vision, computer graphics, video coding, high-speed networking, system design, hardware development, video acquisition and display technologies. The workshop is organised by three different IST projects working in these areas. The first project (VIRTUE) is developing a prototype of an immersive 3D video-conferencing system integrating natural 3D representation of conferees seamlessly into a shared virtual team user environment to enhance quality of human-centred communication The second one (ATTEST) has joined forces to design a scalable and backwards compatible broadcast 3D-TV system and to optimise all parts of a 3D-TV processing chain at one common test platform. The third project (Eye-2-Eye) is related to human factors research of real-time person-to-person communication. Furthermore the workshop is supported by the German Information Technology Society (ITG). The main objective of this workshop is to bring together experts from many different areas related to tele-immersion, to discuss concepts of immersive communication and broadcast systems, to discuss results of real-time communication tests and to demonstrate to a wider audience the potential and feasibility of immersive media. The workshop is based on invited talks and organised in several single track sessions covering the topics of the event. On 30th of January 2003 demonstrations will be shown by the IST projects VIRTUE and ATTEST. For the first time VIRTUE will demonstrate to the public its real-time immersive 3D videoconferencing system with three geographically distributed participants meeting in a shared virtual table environment.
