Investment agreement between Oryzon genomics and the risk capital enterprise Najeti

Barcelona, 2003/02/07.-Located in the Parc Cientific de Barcelona (Barcelona Science Park) (http://www.pcb.ub.es), Oryzon genomics (http://www.oryzon.com), a company devoted to functional genomics, has signed an agreement with the risk capital enterprise Najeti (http://www.najeti.com) through which Najeti will acquire 28% of the company.

Through this transaction, Oryzon will finance its development programmes on new plant species and genomic tools for application in biotechnology in the industrial and biomedical sectors. According to the General Director of Oryzon genomics, Carlos Buesa, with the participation of Najeti, not only will we have the resources to ensure the development of our plan for the identification of genetic targets but our strategic goals will also be strengthened, which we consider highly positive. Oryzon is currently optimising its R+D programmes in order to break even in two years. Moreover, with this agreement Najeti consolidates itself in Spain as a risk capital enterprise specialized in the biotechnology, information technology and telecommunications sectors. Najeti aims to promote entrepreneurship and innovation through providing finance and business management support to new companies, with a strong emphasis on values and social responsibility. Oryzon Genomics, a spin-off from the Universitat de Barcelona (University of Barcelona) and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) (Spanish Council for Scientific Research) devoted to the discovery and analysis of genes, is included in the CIDEM-PCB Bioincubator programme. This company is made up of an international team of 20 scientists, and has developed its own technology for genomic analysis and gene mapping. Among its objectives is Orygene, a project focussed on cereal crops, above all rice. This programme aims to improve crop yield, nutritional quality and resistance to pathogens and adverse climatic conditions. Similarly, the project Orymold, which is a new concept in bioinformatic platforms, allows the integration of a large number of biological data from R+D activities.,
