The second call for proposals for actions under the INCO-COPERNICUS programme of scientific cooperation with the countries of Central Europe (CCE) and with the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS) was launched on 15 April 1997 (OJ No C 117 of 15.4.1997, p. 3...

The second call for proposals for actions under the INCO-COPERNICUS programme of scientific cooperation with the countries of Central Europe (CCE) and with the New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS) was launched on 15 April 1997 (OJ No C 117 of 15.4.1997 p. 38). Preliminary results of this call, which closed on 26 September 1997, are now available. A total of 1,300 proposals were received by the Commission in response to this call. These were evaluated by over 150 external referees from both Western and Eastern Europe. A first analysis shows that the more focused approach adopted under this call was successful in reducing the number of applications. In addition, there is increased participation from the NIS, in particular from the more remote countries, and the majority of scientific coordinators identified in proposals are from Central and Eastern Europe and the NIS. The call focused specifically on those subject areas where there was strong support from Eastern and Western scientists. The areas covered, with the number of proposals received for each area (indicated in brackets), is as follows: - Environmental protection (316); - Environmental and health consequences of ionising radiation (134); - Health research activities (201); - Non-nuclear energy (199); - Advanced communications and telematics applications (20); - Information technologies (137); - Industrial technologies and materials research (119); - Agro-food (118); - Social sciences (56).
