Culture: from Information to Knowledge

The role of culture in the knowledge based society, Moscow, 7 - 9 April 2003

This international conference aims to bring together professionals and policy makers from libraries, museums, archives and other cultural institutions to debate the digital era of culture and its impact on the development of knowledge based societies. The conference should improve communication between memory institutions in Russia, CIS and their counterparts in Central and Eastern Europe, the EU and the USA. In the context of the IST Programme of the European Commission the conference will foster the dissemination and exploitation of IST project results in Russia, showcase best practice in cultural heritage and technology of Russia and create opportunities for future international co-operation. The conference marks the 175th anniversary of the Russian State Library and is organised in conjunction with the RSL-Mellon Foundation project, and the EU funded CULTIVATE Russia project. It will take place in the Russian State Library. The conference is under the patronage of the Russian Ministry of Culture. The conference will combine Rumyantsev Readings, Cultivate-Russia final conference and RSL-Melon Foundation project conference. Traditionally the Rumyantsev Readings at the Russian State Library is an annual event organised by the RSL for a Russian audience in honour of its founder, Count Rumyantsev. 2003 marks a new departure aimed at a Russian and international audience in collaboration with Cultivate Russia and the Mellon Foundation. The conference will be accompanied by an exhibition, which will include a forum or partner- finding for future international projects.
