University of Heidelberg Lautenschlager Research Prize 2003: 250,000 Euros for Top-Flight Research

To be successful, scientific and scholarly research endeavour increasingly requires close cooperation of various kinds with international partners at universities and non-university research institutions. It is with this in mind that Manfred Lautenschläger, honorary senator of the University of Heidelberg and founder of the MLP AG, has elected to support top-flight international research.
At the same time, the award is an outstanding example of the increasingly significant role played by the commitment of private donors in funding university research a development emphasised by Federal Minister Edelgard Bulmahn in her message of appreciation to mark the second awarding of the Prize. Today, many projects in the academic field would be impracticable without aid from private sources. Top-quality research is costly, scientists and scholars invest time and know-how, the community profits from it. I want to support this process of give and take to the tune of a quarter of a million euros, says Lautenschläger.
Recipients of the Prize will be either internationally respected members of the University of Heidelberg itself or researchers from elsewhere with a distinctive and intensive record of academic collaboration with the University. Scientists and scholars from all disciplines are eligible for the Prize, whether they are active in the sciences and medicine, the arts and humanities or the social sciences. In terms of eligibility, no distinction is made between application-oriented and basic research.
The Awarding Committee is made up of renowned scholars and scientists as well as representatives of major academic organisations, such as the President of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the scientific director of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory or the Secretary-General of the Donors Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany.
Candidates can be proposed by members of the academic staff of the University of Heidelberg, by universities abroad with a record of academic cooperation with the University of Heidelberg, by academies of science in Germany and elsewhere, by the major German academic organisations and by holders of the Leibniz Prize and the Max Planck Research Prize. Application for the Prize on ones own behalf is not admissible.
