Genomining's GetDB gives users immediate access to UniProt, the new protein knowledgebase launched this week

Paris, December 22, 2003 -- Genomining, bioinformatics company and provider of real-time biological intelligence solutions, announced today that users of its GetDB remote database download and installation product can already benefit from this week's launch of UniProt, one of the world's largest resources of information on proteins.

Scientists expect UniProt, which brings together three separate world-class databases, to become the primary information resource for proteomic data. UniProt went on line on December 15, 2003, is the result of work undertaken by the UniProt consortium (the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB), and the Protein Information Resource (PIR)). Genomining's GetDB allows remotely located databases to be processed, classified and rendered usable in real time. It is designed to allow a high level of flexibility and configurability. This architectural approach means that tweaking a few parameters gives users immediate access to UniProt with no need for upgrades or development work. "Genomining's objective is to bring immediately usable scientific information to our customers and free them from having to continually monitor and classify the sources that are available to them," said Laurent Voignac, managing director of Genomining. "GetDB is becoming a tool that many scientists and companies can no longer do without because it continually brings the latest information in real time to their desktop. It lets them do what they do best - concentrate on their core research without worrying about whether the data is up to date." "The availability of UniProt is a major event in the integration of proteomics data - and GetDB customers will be among the first to benefit from the increased productivity UniProt brings to life science research," said William Saurin, chairman and chief technology officer of Genomining. "Our success with the Decrypthon project in 2001-2002 was based largely on the integration of sequence databases, and the scientific community is well aware of the value of the integration of resources, now raised to a new level in UniProt." Apart from GetDB, Genomining develops and markets new bioinformatics tools based on the automated analysis of databases. Genomining's intelligent analysis tool can analyze not only available experimental data in databases such as UniProt, but it also scans "biotexts" - publications, articles and proceedings in scientific literature. The process is fast, exhaustive, selective, and brings immediately usable information to the researcher. Speed is of the essence - one reason why Genomining builds all of its products with a real time philosophy, including GetDB. About GetDB:,GetDB is Genomining's automated database downloading solution for biologists, bioinformaticians and researchers who need access to many different types of molecular biology databases for up to date classified data. During the downloading to disk, GetDB makes sure only the new data is downloaded using sophisticated management software. GetDB also ensures the data syntax is usable at the site where it is installed. Other features of GetDB include handling restart after any interruption during downloading; version control, volume allocation and usage measurement; management and removal of outdated information. Plug-ins are available for specific functions such as indexing, formatting and validation at different stages of downloading. GetDB is built around industry standards such as Linux, PostgreSQL, Perl. Genomining carries out installation and maintenance.,For further information on GetDB: http://www.genomining.com/produits.en.html(opens in new window) About Genomining (http://www.genomining.com):,Genomining specializes in the finding and use of biological information. It offers life science companies real-time solutions to accelerate the development of current research projects. Genomining's bioinformatics products allow the analysis of textual data (for example articles, proceedings and publications) and experimental results, as well as continuous monitoring of information sources. Genomining offers its clients a unique combination of access to large scale biological databases and extremely high performance computing as demonstrated by the Decrypthon project a proteome mapping project completed in 2002.,
