Canada invests in International Vaccine Centre and additional BioMedical projects

The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is contributing $19.2 M to built an International Vaccine Centre (INTERVAC) worth $61.8 M, and $6.8 M for the construction of a BioMedical Imaging and Therapy (BMIT) beamline at the Canadian Light Source (CLS), a project worth $17 M on the University of Saskatchewan campus.

INTERVAC, set to open in 2008 or 2009, is built in collaboration with the Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) and will attract a wide array of researchers, notably from Health Canada, the International Vaccine Institute in Korea, and the National Institute of Health in the U.S. The centre will allow highly secured research on human and animal viruses and pathogens associated with Level 3 diseases, such as BSE, SARS, tuberculosis, avian flu, and the West Nile virus. The CFI is also contributing to the construction of the BMIT, the first biomedical imaging beamline in the world to be located on a university campus. Four other CLS beamlines will be constructed at the University of British Columbia and the University of Western Ontario. In total, the CFI will fund 40% of the cost required to build five new beamlines, worth $44.5 M.
